N Wilson Antiques Clocks has dated this Mahogany Fusee Mantel Clock to the 19th Century.
This lovely antique fusee mantel clock has a mahogany case with a rich colour and grain.
The there is then a moulding to the top edge leading to the body of the case with has lions head handles and silk backed fretwork panels to the sides. The front corners then have lovely reeded columns with brass inlay and brass to both the top and the bottom. The front of the case is then inlaid beneath the dial. Finally the case has a moulding leading to the base which is finished by four round, brass feet.
The dial is then painted and set out in black Roman numerals with a thin ring to the outside marking the minutes. The dial is then signed by the maker “BUDGEN Croydon” to the centre. The dial is then finished by two shaped hands as well as a protective glass set into a brass bezel (with working lock and key).
The movement is then wound from the front and accessed from the back. It is a double fusee example of the upmost quality and works perfectly both ticking and chiming as it should. The clock strikes the number of hours on the hour via a bell. The clock also comes complete with its original engraved pendulum, its winding key, and its travel nut. The movement is also beautifully engraved around the edge and is signed by the maker to the centre “Budgen CROYDON”.
William Budgen worked in Croydon 1750-1824.
