Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century French gilt mirrors typically feature hand-carved timber frames finished with plaster or gesso and covered in thin gold leaf. Design elements often reflect Louis XV and Louis XVI Revival styles, incorporating floral crestings, beaded mouldings, and arched tops.

Frames were crafted from carved pine or oak, coated with layers of gesso to create a smooth surface for detailed carving, and finished using water gilding or oil gilding. The glass panels were historically silvered or mercury-backed and secured with pine backboards.

Authentic pieces display evidence of age such as natural oxidation spots on the mirror glass, red bole showing through worn areas of gilding, and original hand-planed timber backboards fastened with square nails or hand-cut joinery.

A substantial mirror can be positioned as a focal point leaning against a primary wall, placed opposite large windows to bounce natural light around a room, or positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or water that can dissolve gesso and gilding. Clean the glass panel using a damp microfibre cloth, ensuring no moisture contacts the gilded wooden edge.
