Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Anglo-Indian Victorian buffet dates from 1850 and is formed from dark reddish-brown padauk wood with small brass castors beneath the carved feet. The heavy openwork side panels display intricate foliate carving, twist-turned supports, and leaf-carved finials rising above the top tier. Three shelves feature beaded edging, complemented by a lower carved stretcher and a fully finished back that allows for freestanding placement. The structure measures 143 cm high, 95 cm wide, and 62 cm deep. Today, this functional surface serves in a living space or study for displaying books, decorative objects, or collections. The rich wood tone and elaborate openwork bring texture and historical character to traditional interiors. Placed against a wall or in an open area, the piece offers accessible display space across multiple tiers while maintaining stability on its original castors.

FAQs

Anglo-Indian and Burmese furniture from this period combines traditional Western forms with intricate regional woodcarving techniques. Crafted predominantly from dense hardwoods like padauk or teak, these pieces feature deep relief carving, openwork, and dense foliate motifs.

These items were constructed from dense tropical hardwoods native to South and Southeast Asia, including padauk, rosewood, and teak. Construction techniques featured hand-cut joinery, carved openwork panels, and integrated brass castors for mobility.

Authentic pieces show evidence of hand-carving with subtle variations in execution, natural oxidisation in protected recessed areas, and the characteristic density and reddish-brown grain of padauk timber. Period brass castors and hand-crafted jointing further confirm age.

A heavily carved tiered buffet serves as a structural focal point in a dining room, hallway, or living space. Positioning the piece against neutral backdrops or in minimally detailed rooms highlights the silhouette and intricate woodcarving.

Maintain the surface by dusting regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish annually to nourish the timber. Position the item away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent wood movement and drying.
