How do I clean the wooden frame?

Dust the hardwood regularly with a dry cloth to prevent dirt accumulation. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that can degrade aged wax or oil finishes over time. For deeper cleaning, apply a specialist beeswax gently with a soft cloth and buff to a mild sheen. Keep moisture away from both the wood and the adjacent textile edges.

Can I use an ottoman as a coffee table?

Larger upholstered stools and ottomans function well as informal coffee tables when paired with a sturdy tray. This setup provides a firm surface for drinks while keeping the soft textile protected. Ensure the frame is stable enough to bear weight before placing heavy items on top. Selecting a piece with firm padding works best for this dual purpose.

Are these stools comfortable to sit on?

Most of these pieces were originally designed for resting feet or sitting briefly at a dressing table rather than lounging. Their padding tends to be firmer than modern living room seating. N ewly upholstered examples often provide a slightly softer sit depending on the internal stuffing used during restoration. Check the height and width dimensions to ensure it suits your intended use.

How do I identify a Victorian stool?

Victorian pieces often feature dark hardwoods like walnut or mahogany combined with heavy carving, buttoned upholstery, or cabriole legs. The joinery and timber characteristics typically point to mid-to-late 19th-century manufacturing methods. Look for signs of age in the timber underside, such as hand-cut screws or oxidized fixings. Stylistic cues like Rococo Revival curves also help date the frame.
