How do I choose the right easel size?

Consider the dimensions and weight of the artwork you plan to display. Tabletop variants suit smaller frames, while floor-standing studio models handle substantial canvases. Check the maximum height and depth of the display ledge to ensure your frame sits securely without obscuring key details.

Can these stands hold heavy oil paintings?

Sturdy nineteenth-century studio models constructed from oak or mahogany are specifically engineered to bear substantial weight. Many include weighted bases or robust floor braces for this exact purpose. Lighter decorative or tabletop stands are better suited to photographs, watercolours, or plates rather than massive framed oils.

How do I operate an adjustable studio easel?

Most adjustable examples use wooden pegs, sliding brackets, or brass winding mechanisms to alter the height of the central shelf. Take care to support the weight of the shelf with one hand while releasing the locking mechanism. Lubricate metal screws sparingly if movement feels stiff, and avoid forcing rusted or stuck wooden tracks.

What is the difference between an easel and a folio stand?

An easel displays a single framed picture or canvas at an inclined angle for viewing or painting. A folio stand holds a collection of unframed prints, drawings, or maps in a double-sided rack. Folio stands fold open into an 'A' frame shape with a supporting hammock, whereas easels have a fixed vertical spine and a projecting base.
