What is a frieze drawer?

A frieze drawer is a compartment integrated into the upper structural rail of a table, positioned just beneath the top surface. It allows for discreet storage of small items without altering the exterior silhouette of the furniture. These drawers are common in writing desks, side tables, and dining tables across various historical periods.

How do I date an antique wooden table?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, joinery methods, and overall stylistic characteristics. Pieces from the eighteenth century often feature hand-cut joints and native hardwoods. Later nineteenth and twentieth-century examples incorporate machinery marks, different fastener types, and distinct revival styles.

Where were these tables used?

These tables served multiple functions in domestic and institutional settings, functioning as kitchen work surfaces, dining furniture, or library writing desks. Smaller side tables and console versions occupied hallways and parlours for display or correspondence. Larger refectory and farmhouse tables anchored communal dining spaces.

How should I maintain an antique wooden table?

Maintenance involves keeping wooden surfaces away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent splitting. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the finish without chemical buildup. Leather tops require specific care to avoid drying out or staining.
