How do I date a wooden double door cabinet?

Dating relies upon observing timber choices, construction methods, and stylistic cues such as bracket feet or cornice moulding. Eighteenth-century pieces often display hand-sawn timbers and specific regional joinery. Later Victorian and Edwardian examples incorporate factory-standardised fixings and machine-cut elements alongside period revival motifs like Georgian or Sheraton influences.

Are these cabinets suitable for modern clothing?

Many double door cabinets originally served as linen presses or shelved cupboards rather than modern wardrobes. Internal depths and configurations vary across centuries. Some pieces retain fixed shelving that requires adaptation for hanging clothes, while others offer deep compartments or dedicated hanging space built into the original design.

What is the difference between an armoire and a wardrobe?

Armoire is traditionally a continental term for a large two-door cupboard, frequently constructed with substantial depth and heavy architectural cornices. Wardrobe generally denotes British forms developed specifically for hanging garments. In practice, surviving examples across these categories overlap significantly in function and internal layout.

How should I care for antique wood finishes?

Traditional wax and polish finishes require minimal intervention beyond dusting with a dry, soft cloth. Avoiding direct sunlight and maintaining stable room humidity protects veneers from drying and splitting. Occasional applications of natural beeswax maintain the sheen without building up synthetic residues.
