What is the difference between an armoire and a wardrobe?

Traditionally, an armoire is a movable cupboard used for storing clothes or armour, whereas a wardrobe specifically refers to a tall closet equipped for hanging garments. In antique markets, the terms are often used interchangeably. Many older pieces were built primarily with internal shelves for folded textiles rather than hanging rails, reflecting historical clothing storage habits.

How do I care for a painted antique cupboard?

Maintenance requires gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that might strip the aged paint surface. Keeping the timber away from direct heat sources prevents the wood from warping and the paint from cracking. Allowing the piece to acclimate to stable indoor humidity preserves both the structural joinery and the historic finish.

Are these pieces easy to dismantle for moving?

Many antique cupboards and armoires of this scale were constructed as single, solid units fixed with traditional joinery rather than modern knock-down fittings. Buyers should check the specific dimensions and construction methods of individual pieces before attempting transport. Navigating tight stairwells or doorways often requires professional removal specialists familiar with heavy antique furniture.

How can I tell a Swedish piece from an English one?

Swedish and Gustavian pieces frequently exhibit distinct neoclassical mouldings, softer white or pale grey paint tones, and specific pine construction details. English country house examples tend to display heavier proportions and utilitarian oak or pine surfaces. Hardware styles and interior layouts also offer clues to the regional workshop traditions that shaped each piece.
