What is a sea chest used for?

A sea chest served sailors, soldiers, and travellers as a secure container for personal clothing, uniforms, and valuables during long ocean voyages. Today, these chests function primarily as living room coffee tables, bedroom blanket boxes, or hallway storage units.

Why do these chests smell like camphor?

The distinct aroma comes from the natural camphor wood timber used to construct the interior and exterior of the trunks. This aromatic oil naturally repels moths and insects, protecting stored garments. Over decades, the wood retains this characteristic scent, which often intensifies slightly when the lid is opened.

How do I date a campaign trunk?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods, the style of the brass hardware, and any visible maker marks or inscriptions. Victorian and nineteenth-century examples often feature hand-cut dovetails and heavy cast brass fittings. Later pieces from around 1900 or 1920 may display more standardised machine-made components while retaining traditional forms.

Can I use a sea chest as a coffee table?

These chests make ideal coffee tables due to their flat lids, sturdy wooden construction, and generous proportions. They offer hidden storage for books, blankets, and board games while anchoring a room with historic timber. Ensure you place coasters on the surface to protect the historic polish and timber grain from moisture rings.
