How do I date a wingback chair?

Dating relies on examining the timber of the legs, the shape of the wings, and the underlying construction methods. Earlier eighteenth-century pieces display different proportions compared to 1930s revivals. Upholstery materials and tack styles also offer clues, though many items have been re-covered over time to suit later tastes.

Are these chairs suitable for daily use?

Most vintage wingback seating is structurally sound and built for comfortable sitting, particularly designs featuring feather fillings and robust hardwood frames. Buyers should assess the internal webbing and padding depth. Some pieces sold specifically for re-upholstery require interior restoration before regular placement in a living space.

What is a Howard style chair?

Howard style refers to deep, comfortable upholstered seating known for its rolled arms and generous proportions. Originating from a celebrated nineteenth-century firm, the aesthetic prioritises supreme lounging comfort. These pieces integrate well into traditional English country house interiors alongside polished walnut and mahogany furniture.

How do I care for leather wingbacks?

Leather and hide upholstery benefits from regular dusting and occasional conditioning to prevent the material from drying out. Keeping antique seating away from direct sunlight preserves the original colour. Gentle care ensures that sheep's hide and dyed leathers retain their supple texture for years to come.
