What is a chevet cabinet?

A chevet cabinet is a small French bedside cupboard or table designed to hold nighttime essentials. They typically feature a combination of a small drawer and a cupboard space behind a single door. Historically placed immediately beside the bed, these compact units kept personal items close at hand while adding a decorative touch to the chamber.

Are these cabinets French in origin?

The vast majority of these cabinets follow French stylistic traditions, including Louis XV and Rococo revival forms. Makers in France produced them extensively throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They are characterised by curved lines, marquetry inlay, and sophisticated hardware that reflect Parisian design influences of those periods.

Do they usually come in pairs?

Many of these bedside cabinets are found and offered as matching pairs, which makes them particularly sought after for symmetrical bedroom arrangements. Single cabinets also appear frequently. When purchasing a pair, buyers secure matching wood grain, marble tops, and decorative brass mounts that create a balanced look on either side of a bed.

How do I care for marble tops?

Marble surfaces benefit from regular wiping with a soft, damp cloth and neutral soap to prevent staining from liquids or cosmetics. Avoid acidic cleaners that can etch the polished stone finish. Using coasters and mats helps protect the natural stone from moisture rings and scratches while maintaining its decorative sheen over decades of daily use.
