How do I hang a heavy antique wooden door?

Hanging a heavy salvaged panel requires assessing the weight distribution and securing robust iron or brass hinges directly into structural studs or masonry. Professional joiners often employ reinforced frames to bear the load without sagging. Ensuring the threshold and jamb are plumb allows the heavy timber to swing smoothly despite centuries of potential environmental movement.

Can I use these doors for exterior entryways?

Many historic panels were originally built for exterior use, particularly those constructed from durable hardwoods like oak or teak. Weatherproofing depends on treating the timber with suitable oils or varnishes while retaining the historic surface. Exposed locations require checking that the original joinery remains tight and that any historical ironwork is protected against moisture.

How do I clean a painted vintage timber door?

Cleaning requires gentle methods such as soft dusting and wiping with a damp cloth to preserve delicate historical paint layers or wax finishes. Harsh chemical solvents risk stripping away the patinated surfaces that define the age of the piece. Allowing the wood to dry naturally prevents moisture penetration and maintains the integrity of the underlying material.

How do I tell an Edwardian door from an 18th-century one?

Eighteenth-century examples typically exhibit hand-cut joinery, pegged tenons, and heavier proportions associated with Georgian architecture. Edwardian pieces often display machine-planed timber, standardised hardware, and simpler panel configurations. Examining the tool marks and the type of wood provides clear clues regarding the manufacturing period.
