How do I hang heavy textured oil paintings?

These works require secure wall fixings suited to the combined weight of the thick paint and the wood frame. Ensure the wire or D-rings on the reverse connect firmly to appropriate wall anchors. Position the painting at eye level away from direct heat sources to protect the oil pigments and the wooden support over time.

How do I date a mid-century oil painting?

Examine the reverse of the canvas, board, or wood frame for signatures, dates, artist inscriptions, and gallery labels. The specific materials, such as hardboard supports, often point toward the middle decades of the twentieth century. Stilistic markers like mid-century abstract or expressionist tendencies provide further context for the period of creation.

What is the difference between canvas and board?

Canvas is fabric stretched over a wooden frame, offering slight give when touched. Board and hardboard provide a completely rigid, unyielding surface for the oil paint. Both supports accommodated heavy impasto applications during the twentieth century, though board frequently appeared in constructivist and abstract works.
