How do I date a vintage oil painting?

Dating relies on stylistic markers, framing methods, and stretcher construction. Canvas types and pigment analysis also assist in determining the period. Signatures and inscriptions on the reverse often point to active exhibition dates or specific years of creation.

What is the difference between canvas and board?

Canvas requires stretching over a wooden frame, providing a flexible surface that responds to atmospheric changes. Board offers a rigid support favoured for smaller or en plein air studies. Both materials host oil paint successfully, though board paintings often date to specific sketching traditions.

Where were most of these marine scenes painted?

Paintings originate from coastal regions across Britain, France, Scandinavia, and the Mediterranean. Artists travelled to working ports and fishing villages to capture authentic maritime activity. Locations are frequently recorded by the artist directly on the reverse of the canvas or board.
