How do I care for a vintage ruby and diamond ring?

Clean your jewellery gently using warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft-bristled brush to remove everyday oils from beneath the cluster. Avoid harsh ultrasonic cleaners, especially if the rubies show evidence of historical fracture-filling treatments. Store pieces individually in soft pouches to prevent the harder diamonds from scratching the softer gold settings or the rubies. Regular checks by a professional jeweller will ensure the claws remain secure.

What is the difference between an Edwardian and an Art Deco cluster?

Edwardian clusters tend to use platinum and yellow gold to create delicate, lace-like floral or garland motifs with milgrain detailing. The overall impression is organic, light, and deeply romantic. Art Deco examples shift toward bold geometry, symmetry, and stark contrasts utilising platinum alongside calibre-cut rubies and brilliant diamonds. These later pieces favour strong lines, target shapes, and stylized architectural forms.

Are these rubies natural or treated?

Many vintage and antique pieces feature natural corundum sourced from historic locations such as Burma, with gemmological reports often accompanying higher-grade examples to confirm origin. Some stones carry certification detailing whether they are unheated or have undergone traditional clarity enhancements. Checking individual listings or laboratory certificates provides definitive answers regarding the specific geological history of the ruby. Untreated stones of significant size remain particularly sought after by collectors.

Can I wear a cluster ring every day?

Diamonds rate ten on the Mohs hardness scale, making them exceptionally durable for daily wear, while rubies rank at nine. However, the delicate claws and intricate galleries of antique and vintage settings require mindful handling during rough tasks. Remove your ring when gardening, exercising, or lifting heavy objects to protect the structural integrity of the basket mount. Routine inspection of the prongs prevents accidental stone loss over time.
