How do I wind a tallcase clock?

Winding involves using a key or pulling cords to raise the hanging weights back up toward the top of the case. Care must be taken not to overwind the movement. Different movements require attention either daily, weekly, or at other intervals depending on whether the clock runs on a thirty-hour or eight-day train.

Where should I place a longcase clock?

Position the clock against a solid interior wall where it will not suffer from heavy vibrations or dramatic temperature swings. Floor stability is vital for the pendulum to swing evenly. Keeping the case away from direct sunlight protects the oak finish and prevents the wood from drying out over time.

What is the difference between a grandfather and grandmother clock?

The primary distinction lies in overall height and proportion. Grandfather clocks stand as full-sized architectural floor clocks, while grandmother clocks are scaled down. Both use weights and pendulums, but the smaller variant was designed to fit domestic spaces that could not accommodate a tall 18th-century case.

How do I date an oak tallcase clock?

Dating relies on stylistic clues in the oak case, the shape of the dial, and the mechanical configuration inside. Brass dial layouts and lettering styles changed noticeably from the 17th century through the Georgian era. Maker signatures recorded on the face often allow the exact working period of the clockmaker to be traced through historical records.
