How do cylinder music boxes work?

A wound spring turns a pinned metal cylinder inside the wooden case. The projecting pins strike the tuned teeth of a steel comb in precise sequence to produce melody.

An air refers to an individual musical tune programmed onto the revolving cylinder. Boxes range from standard eight-air configurations to larger arrangements played in sequence.

How do I care for my box?

Keep the wooden case away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature changes to protect the finish. Wind the spring mechanism gently and avoid forcing any levers or stops.

What woods were used for cases?

Maker workshops utilised sturdy hardwoods such as rosewood, walnut, and burr walnut. Ebonised wood and marquetry inlay were also applied to enhance the visual appearance.
