How do I clean vintage mother of pearl?

Wipe the surface gently with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and oils. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive cloths or prolonged soaking in water, which can damage the delicate shell and its mounts. Dry the piece thoroughly with a clean lint-free cloth immediately after cleaning. For items set in silver or gold, use appropriate metal polish carefully to avoid touching the nacre.

Are these pieces made from real shell?

Yes, genuine pieces utilise natural nacre harvested from the inner layer of pearl oysters, freshwater mussels and abalone shells. Natural variations in thickness, grain and iridescent colour distinguish authentic material from synthetic plastics. Examining the surface under magnification reveals organic growth lines and subtle irregularities absent in manufactured substitutes.

How can I tell Victorian pieces from later ones?

Victorian items often feature deep papier-mâché foundations with hand-painted lacquer and dense floral inlay. Hallmarks on attached silver or gold mounts provide precise dating for specific years. Later Edwardian and Art Deco examples tend towards sleeker geometric designs, lighter wood frames and different metal alloys reflecting changing aesthetic preferences.

How were inlaid tables used originally?

Inlaid tables served as decorative occasional pieces for holding small lamps, calling card trays or writing accessories in formal drawing rooms. Their intricate surfaces displayed household wealth and an appreciation for global craftsmanship. Today they function well as bedside tables or accent pieces in living spaces where their detailed inlay remains visible.
