What is a highboy chest?

How do tallboys and chests on chests differ?

A tallboy typically refers to a single tall case or a chest on stand, whereas a chest on chest explicitly involves two distinct drawer sections stacked together. Both forms offer elevated storage capacity compared to standard low chests of drawers.

What woods were used for these chests?

Cabinetmakers constructed these chests predominantly using mahogany and walnut, often featuring figured veneers like burr walnut. Other examples utilise oak, elm, satinwood, and pine according to the period.

How do I place a tall chest in a room?

The vertical height of these chests makes them suitable for bedrooms or dressing areas needing substantial storage without consuming floor space. Anchoring them securely against a wall is standard practice for tall furniture.

Are these chests eighteenth century or later?

The selection includes original eighteenth-century pieces from the Georgian and Queen Anne eras alongside twentieth-century revival pieces. Details such as timber choice, construction methods, and brass hardware help distinguish the periods.
