How do I install a heavy brass door knocker?

Most antique knockers use threaded bolts that pass through the door from the interior. Ensure the fixing points align correctly with your door's thickness and existing holes. For heavy bronze or cast iron pieces, check that the weight is adequately supported to prevent sagging over time.

What is a doctor's knocker?

A doctor's knocker is a distinct two-part design where the pivoting hammer strikes a lower plate rather than the door itself. This configuration produced a specific sound intended to alert household occupants. Victorian and later examples of this style appear frequently in solid brass.

How do I clean antique brass hardware?

Traditional cleaning involves mild soap and warm water applied with a soft brush to remove surface dirt. Avoid harsh chemical abrasives that strip away historical patination. Polished bronze and brass items respond well to gentle buffing if you prefer a brighter metallic finish.

Are these door knockers suitable for exterior use?

Cast brass, bronze, and iron possess the durability required for outdoor environments. Over time, exposure to weather naturally alters the surface finish of unlacquered metals. Period pieces function reliably on modern exterior doors provided the fixings match the weight of the metal.
