How do I identify a Louis XV style sofa?

A Louis XV style sofa is distinguished by its asymmetrical curved lines, cabriole legs, and carved floral motifs. The overall form avoids straight edges in favour of flowing organic contours. Such pieces frequently utilise walnut or painted wood frames paired with cane or upholstered elements.

What is the difference between a settee and a canapé?

A canapé is specifically the traditional French term for an upholstered sofa with an exposed wooden frame. Settee is a broader English term for a small domestic bench or sofa seating two or more people. Both terms frequently describe similar nineteenth century seating configurations.

How should I care for caned furniture?

Caned panels require gentle dusting and occasional light moisture to prevent the rattan from becoming brittle. Keeping the material away from direct heat sources preserves its natural flexibility. Properly maintained cane supports daily use over many decades.

Where did country french sofas originate?

These seating designs evolved in French provincial chateaux and regional workshops during the nineteenth century. Makers adapted court aesthetics into simpler domestic forms. The resulting pieces combined local fruitwoods and walnut with traditional regional upholstery methods.
