How do you adjust the shade height?

The painted metal shade slides vertically along the central brass rod and is held in place by a small thumbscrew or key at the top. This mechanism allowed historical users to lower the shade as the candles burned down, keeping the light focused on the table surface.

Were these originally for candles or electricity?

Original examples were designed for wax candles used during card games or reading, utilising multiple branches around a central column. Many surviving pieces have since been wired for electricity while retaining their original adjustable candle-arm appearance.

What rooms suit a bouillotte lamp?

Their compact footprint makes them well suited to desks, side tables, and study spaces where directed task lighting is useful. The green tole shade and polished brass finish also integrate naturally into traditional living rooms and libraries.

How do you date an older lamp?

Dating relies on examining the casting quality of the brass, the wear on the painted toleware, and the construction methods of the wiring or candle sockets. Nineteenth-century pieces typically show heavier metal components and hand-finished details compared to mid-twentieth-century productions.
