What is a club fender?

A club fender is a hearth surround featuring low upholstered seats on either side of the fireplace. They originated in gentlemen's clubs to allow close access to the fire. In this selection, examples combine brass, copper, and iron to create a functional seating area directly around the hearth.

How do I clean antique copper?

Antique copper generally retains a darker, patinated surface acquired over decades of use. Aggressive polishing removes this historic finish and diminishes the character of the piece. Dusting with a dry cloth or applying a microcrystalline wax preserves the metal without stripping the age.

What defines Arts and Crafts copper?

Arts and Crafts copperwork emphasises visible hand craftsmanship, honest construction, and vernacular styles. Pieces often display hand-beaten textures, exposed rivets, and stylized floral motifs. Scottish and English workshops produced these items to counter mass-produced industrial manufacturing.

Are firescreens safe for open fires?

Many vintage firescreens incorporate fine wire mesh specifically designed to arrest sparks from solid fuel fires. Rigid copper panels function primarily as reflectors or decorative summer screens when the hearth is not in use. Assessing the construction material helps determine whether a piece suits active duty or decorative placement.
