How do I assemble an antique iron bed?

Most antique iron frames rely on wedge-and-socket joints where the side rails drop directly into slots on the headboard and footboard posts. Gravity and mattress weight lock these joints firmly into place without needing modern screws. Ensure the frame sits squarely on a level floor before dropping in wooden slats or modern base supports. Tap joints gently with a rubber mallet if metal parts stick after decades of separation.

Will a vintage frame fit a modern mattress?

Victorian and Edwardian sizing standards differ slightly from modern metric or imperial mattress dimensions. Double-check the internal length and width of the iron side rails against your intended mattress size. Many listings offer custom or standard UK sizes such as king or super king, but older pieces may require bespoke slats or minor adjustments to ensure a snug fit.

How do I care for cast iron and brass?

Dust cast iron surfaces regularly with a dry cloth and clean brass elements using a dedicated non-abrasive metal polish. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip protective lacquers or damage painted iron finishes. Keep ironwork away from damp environments to prevent surface oxidation, and apply a light microcrystalline wax to preserve the dark patina of the metal.

Are these frames strong enough for daily use?

Solid cast iron and wrought iron construction provides exceptional structural integrity that easily supports contemporary mattress weights and daily sleeping habits. The thick metal posts and mechanical joints are built to last for generations. Inspect the structural side rails and joints periodically to ensure fixings remain tight and supportive under regular movement.
