How do I clean old brass candelabra?

Dust the metal gently with a soft, dry cloth to remove surface particles. Avoid chemical polishes that strip original patination or damage delicate gilt bronze and ormolu surfaces.

What is a clock garniture?

A clock garniture is a matched decorative set designed for display on a mantelpiece. It consists of a central clock accompanied by matching side pieces such as candelabra or urns.

How can I date these pieces?

Dating relies upon stylistic markers such as Rococo revival scrolls or Neoclassical symmetry alongside material combinations like green onyx and ormolu. Maker marks stamped onto the bronze or clock movements also provide precise manufacturing periods.

Can I use real candles in them?

Many candelabra accommodate standard taper candles within their drip pans and sconces. Check the nozzle dimensions and ensure the piece sits level on the mantel before lighting.
