What is a campaign chest?

A campaign chest is a modular set of drawers or a trunk built for military transport. Officers required sturdy storage that could endure frequent journeys. These pieces typically feature flush brass handles and reinforced corners to prevent snagging and damage during transit.

Why use camphor wood?

Camphor wood was chosen for travelling trunks because its strong natural scent repels moths and insects. This protected uniforms and papers in humid climates. The timber also resists moisture while remaining relatively lightweight for its strength.

How do I clean brass corners?

Cleaning depends on whether you prefer a bright shine or an aged patina. Gentle dusting and mild soapy water preserve the historic surface best. Abrasive metal polishes should be used sparingly to avoid marking the surrounding timber.

Are these boxes waterproof?

These trunks were built to withstand rough weather and sea voyages during the nineteenth century. However, vintage timber and joints can dry out over time. Treat historical chests as decorative storage rather than vessels for damp environments.
