What is the difference between a trunk and a coffer?

A coffer is typically a heavy, older wooden chest constructed with frame-and-panel techniques for domestic storage. Trunks generally incorporate materials like leather, metal bindings, and canvas, built primarily for travel and mobility.

Why are so many campaign trunks made of camphor wood?

Camphor wood repels moths and insects, making it the ideal timber for protecting woollens and uniforms during long sea voyages. Its natural oils also resist moisture and humidity in tropical climates.

How do I distinguish a Victorian pine trunk from an 18th-century one?

Eighteenth-century pieces often feature hand-carved details, pegged joinery, and timbers like oak or elm with deep patination. Victorian pine trunks tend towards simpler utilitarian construction, machine-sawn elements, and iron side handles designed for estate or travel use.

Where should I place a blanket box in a modern home?

These pieces function well at the foot of a bed for spare linens, or in a hallway as a storage bench. Their robust construction also allows them to serve as coffee tables with internal storage capabilities.
