How do I care for lacquer furniture?

Keep lacquered pieces out of direct sunlight and away from extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent the finish from cracking. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners. Maintain a stable indoor humidity level to protect both the wooden substrate and the delicate surface layers from warping or deterioration.

Are these sideboards practical for daily use?

Most pieces offer functional drawers, cupboards, or shelving suited for modern storage needs in living areas or hallways. The internal layouts reflect their original domestic or mercantile purpose. Checking the dimensions and internal depth helps ensure the cabinet accommodates contemporary items like tableware or media equipment.

How can I tell Japanese tansu from Chinese cabinets?

Japanese tansu chests typically feature exposed or black iron hardware, emphasising structural framing and functional modularity. They often utilise woods like keyaki or cryptomeria. Chinese sideboards and cabinets frequently display softer timber grains like elm or feature decorative lacquer, carved panels, and brass mountings.

What is the difference between elm and teak furniture?

Chinese elm possesses a prominent, expressive grain pattern that takes patination well and responds to traditional wax finishes. It forms the basis of many rustic sideboards and console tables. Teak offers a denser, heavier build with natural oils that resist moisture, appearing more frequently in utilitarian cupboards and regional storage chests.
