How do I clean a vintage anatolia rug?

Surface dust should be removed gently using a standard suction vacuum without a beating bar, moving carefully in the direction of the pile. Professional textile conservators should handle wet cleaning to protect natural wool fibres and traditional dye stuffs. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or steam washing entirely, as moisture and heat can destabilise nineteenth-century organic dyes and weaken old cotton foundations.

Can I place these rugs in high traffic areas?

Wool and cotton construction provides robust natural durability, allowing many village and tribal rugs to withstand everyday domestic use. Placing a breathable, high-friction underlay beneath the carpet prevents slipping and reduces fibre wear. Delicate prayer formats or pieces with significantly low pile benefit from placement in quieter rooms or display as wall hangings to preserve their structure.

How do I identify a prayer rug?

Prayer rugs feature a distinct architectural arch, known as a mihrab, pointing toward Mecca at one end of the field. This central motif directed the user during daily devotions in Turkish households. Smaller dimensions and narrow formats distinguish these pieces from larger room-sized carpets and tribal floor coverings.

What is the difference between village and workshop rugs?

Village and nomadic rugs display spontaneous geometric layouts, tribal symbols, and saturated primary colours woven on domestic looms. Workshop carpets exhibit formal curves, sophisticated floral medallions, and balanced tonal compositions designed by master artisans. Regional attribution often becomes clear through examining these distinct design structures and the specific spinning methods of the wool.
