How do I clean a ruffled glass vase?

Wash the glass gently in lukewarm water using mild soap, avoiding harsh scrubbing on enamel or satin surfaces. Dry thoroughly with a soft cloth to protect delicate folded rims. Take extra care around brass mounts and white metal fittings on epergnes, keeping moisture away from joined areas to prevent tarnishing or damage.

What is cranberry glass?

Cranberry glass is a rich red-pink transparent material created by adding gold chloride to the molten glass batch. It became a defining colour of the Victorian period. Artisans frequently shaped this glass into ruffled vases and epergne trumpets, often pairing it with clear glass or uranium green glass bases.

How do I spot uranium glass?

Uranium glass contains small amounts of uranium oxide, which gives the material a distinctive yellow-green tint in normal light. Under ultraviolet light, these pieces glow with a bright green fluorescence. Victorian makers utilised this reactive glass for vases, trumpet epergnes, and decorative bases.

What is a Mary Gregory vase?

Mary Gregory vases feature white enamelled silhouettes of Victorian children playing amidst foliage, painted onto coloured glass bodies. These decorated vessels gained widespread popularity during the nineteenth century. Collectors find them in various hues, including cranberry and blue satin glass forms.
