Can I use these on a modern desk?

These pieces were originally built to illuminate writing surfaces, ledgers, and drawing tables during the nineteenth century. Their sturdy weighted bases and focused height make them exceptionally well suited for modern desk placement. Pair them with a low-wattage LED bulb that mimics warm incandescent light to protect historic materials from excessive heat.

What is the difference between ormolu and brass?

Ormolu specifically refers to gilded bronze, where a layer of gold is bonded to a copper alloy base through traditional fire-gilding or chemical processes. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc with a simpler, yellower metallic composition throughout. True ormolu carries a softer, warmer golden hue and finer cast detail than standard polished brass.

Were these lamps originally electrified?

Almost none of these pieces started life with electric fittings, as they were originally designed for candles, oil, or gas illumination. Many survived as candlesticks or fluid lamps before being converted to electricity during the twentieth century. Conversions are standard for antique lighting and allow these decorative metal objects to function as practical desk lamps today.
