How do I install a centre door knob?

Centre door knobs typically mount directly through the front of the door using a robust spindle or bolted fixing. Ensure the interior backing plate aligns securely to support the weight and pull action. Because these are heavy brass fixtures, pre-drilling pilot holes prevents splitting the timber door frame during fitting.

Can I use an antique bell pull today?

Most antique bell pulls function as decorative architectural hardware rather than connected to working mechanical bells. Adapting them to modern chimes requires bespoke internal wire or spring rigging. Many buyers mount them purely for their period aesthetic alongside modern entry hardware.

How do I clean antique brass hardware?

Gentle washing with warm soapy water and a soft brush removes surface dust without stripping historic patination. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip the darkened age layers prized by collectors. Dry the metal thoroughly with a soft cloth to prevent water spotting after cleaning.

What is the difference between brass and bronze hardware?

Brass is a copper and zinc alloy offering a bright golden hue, while bronze contains copper and tin for a darker, heavier finish. Bronze pieces often show greater resistance to wear in exposed exterior locations. Both materials were utilised extensively across the Victorian and Georgian periods for high-traffic entryways.
