How do I care for a wood panel painting?

Keep the panel away from direct sunlight and sudden fluctuations in temperature or humidity. Stable room conditions prevent the wood from warping and protect the oil paint layer from stress. Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid using liquid cleaners or chemical agents. Professional conservation ensures the paint layer remains secure on its rigid support.

Why did artists paint on wood instead of canvas?

Wood panels provided a completely rigid and smooth surface that allowed for meticulous detail and fine glazing techniques. Artists valued the stability this medium offered for miniature works and portable compositions. Wooden boards were readily available and required less preparation than stretching fabric over a wooden stretcher frame. This practice continued across centuries for painters seeking a durable ground.

Where should I hang an oil painting panel?

Select an interior wall away from radiators, fireplaces, or damp areas to protect the wooden support from environmental damage. Positioning the work at eye level in a well-lit room highlights the subtle textures of the oil paint. Ensure the wall fixings are secure and appropriate for the weight of the solid wood frame. Pairing the panel with complementary historic decor enhances its visual presence in your home.
