What defines a traditional club chair?

A traditional club chair is a low, deep-seated armchair designed for relaxation, typically upholstered in leather or heavy fabric. These pieces emerged strongly during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They emphasise generous proportions and sturdy wooden frames, often associated with English country houses and libraries. The category includes wingbacks, Bridgewater styles, and notable maker designs.

How do I identify an Edwardian club chair?

Edwardian examples often feature lighter proportions, sometimes utilising walnut or mahogany frames with refined turned legs. They may incorporate split cane panels or elegant upholstery. Compared to heavier Victorian pieces, these chairs frequently lean towards refined aesthetics while maintaining deep, comfortable seating arrangements.

Where were leather club chairs used?

Leather club chairs historically found places in gentlemen's clubs, libraries, and studies where durable seating was required. Their robust hides withstood heavy daily use. Over time, these comfortable armchairs transitioned into domestic drawing rooms and living spaces as versatile lounging furniture.

How should I care for antique leather upholstery?

Antique leather requires gentle maintenance to preserve its natural flexibility and prevent the surface from drying out. Avoid placing the chair near direct heat sources or strong sunlight. Regular dusting and appropriate leather treatments help maintain the historic patina without altering the original character of the hide.
