How do I hang a heavy overmantel mirror?

These large mirrors require secure wall fixings tied directly into the masonry or heavy studwork above the fireplace. Professional installation is standard practice given the substantial weight of the timber and glass. Weight distribution across multiple points ensures the frame remains stable and safe against the chimney breast over time.

Are these mirrors meant to sit on the mantel?

Many overmantel mirrors are designed to rest directly on the mantelpiece shelf while being secured to the wall at the top for safety. This placement allows the frame to anchor visually to the fireplace surround. Alternatively, they can be hung slightly above the shelf depending on the ceiling height and proportions of the room.

How do I clean nineteenth-century mirror glass?

Gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth prevents the accumulation of grime on both the frame and the glass. Avoid harsh chemical sprays that can seep behind the plate and damage the original backing. Water should be used sparingly, if at all, to protect fragile giltwood and gesso surfaces from moisture damage.
