What is a target cluster ring?

A target cluster ring is a piece of jewellery featuring a central gemstone encircled by one or more concentric rings of smaller stones. This concentric arrangement creates a bold, geometric face that draws the eye directly to the middle. Most examples date from the late Victorian, Edwardian, and Art Deco eras. The design prioritises symmetry and maximum visual impact through contrasting gemstone colours.

How do I date a target ring?

Dating relies on material combinations, cutting styles, and mounting techniques. Edwardian pieces often use platinum-topped yellow gold with delicate millegrain work, while Art Deco examples lean into stark platinum and geometric layouts. Victorian iterations frequently feature rose cut diamonds or deep sapphires paired with heavier yellow gold shanks. Examining the back of the gallery also reveals period-specific hand-piercing methods.

Are these rings suitable for daily wear?

These rings survive from past centuries because their low profile protects the main stones from heavy knocks. Platinum and 18ct gold provide durable foundations for everyday use. Owners should consult a jeweller periodically to check the tiny claws and millegrain borders holding the outer ring of stones. Gentle cleaning with warm soapy water maintains the sparkle of the concentric tiers.

What stones are used in target clusters?

Diamonds form the focal point or the surrounding tiers in the majority of these pieces. Coloured gemstones such as sapphires, emeralds, rubies, and pink sapphires provide the contrasting inner or outer bands. Earrings and rings alike utilise these colour combinations to create distinct visual layers. The interplay between white diamonds and saturated gemstones defines the classic appearance of the style.
