What is included in a condiment set?

A standard set comprises receptacles for salt, pepper and mustard, sometimes arranged on a shared stand or within a presentation box. Additional pieces like butter dishes or extra casters occasionally appear in larger fitted services.

How do I care for silver condiment pieces?

Silver requires occasional gentle cleaning with a specialised polish to remove tarnish while preserving the underlying detail and hallmarks. Glass liners should be removed and washed separately in warm soapy water to prevent residue build-up against the metal.

Why do some salts have blue glass?

Open salt cellars incorporated cobalt or blue glass liners to prevent the salt from corroding the silver body over time. These coloured glass inserts remain a desirable feature when found in their original configuration.

How are different periods identified?

Hallmarks stamped onto the silver provide official date letters and assay office symbols to pinpoint the year of manufacture. Stylistic cues such as Edwardian proportions or Art Deco geometric motifs further support visual dating.
