What is a brushing slide?

A brushing slide is a pull-out wooden shelf located just beneath the top surface or top drawer of a chest. It provided a clean temporary surface for sorting items. Cabinetmakers integrated these smoothly into the frame so they remained hidden when not in use.

How do I date a mahogany chest?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods, handle types, foot styles and timber selection. Georgian pieces often feature hand-cut dovetails and oak linings. Later revivals incorporate standardised machine-cut elements and different secondary woods like deal or pine.

Are bow front chests later additions?

Bow front chests appear extensively in late 18th century Georgian and Regency periods. The curved design required specialist steaming and veneer bending techniques. Later Edwardian and 1920s makers reproduced these forms using historical styling cues.

How should I care for mahogany furniture?

Mahogany requires stable room temperatures away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting. Regular dusting with a soft dry cloth maintains the surface. Applying occasional appropriate wax preserves the natural lustre of the polished wood.
