What is a bonheur du jour?

A bonheur du jour is a light ladies writing desk featuring a small superstructure of drawers and shelves upon the writing surface. These pieces emerged during the French revival periods for correspondence and display. They offer compact workspaces suitable for drawing rooms and boudoirs without dominating the floor plan.

How do I use a Davenport desk?

A Davenport desk provides a sloping, often leather-inset writing lid above a pedestal of side drawers. The user sits at the slope while storage remains integrated beneath. The top compartment frequently houses stationery and inkwells, keeping writing materials organised within a single compact unit.

How do I distinguish Edwardian from Victorian desks?

Edwardian desks, dating around nineteen hundred, generally display lighter satinwood or mahogany frames with delicate boxwood inlay and Sheraton revival styling. Victorian examples tend to use heavier burr walnut or rosewood with bolder proportions. Victorian pieces also frequently include Davenport forms and elaborate French revival marquetry.

Are these desks suitable for modern laptops?

These compact desks accommodate small laptops and tablets on their leather or wood writing surfaces, provided the dimensions match your equipment. Fitted interiors and drawers offer storage for modern desk accessories. Care should be taken to protect antique wood and leather surfaces from heat and moisture.
