What is a silver table lighter?

A silver table lighter is a heavy, decorative smoking accessory designed to remain stationary on a desk or smoking table. They provided a ready flame for cigars and cigarettes in formal rooms. Unlike pocket matches or portable vestas, these pieces functioned as ornamental objects as well as practical household items.

How were novelty table lighters used?

Novelty table lighters served as both conversation pieces and functional flame sources during gatherings. Guests would use the mechanism while the object sat on a dining or library table. Their whimsical shapes, such as hunting horns or animals, matched the playful aesthetic of Victorian and Edwardian smoking culture.

How do I identify the period of a table lighter?

The period can be identified through a combination of hallmarks, stylistic design cues, and manufacturing materials. Victorian pieces often feature heavy classical or ornate animal forms, while Art Deco items lean towards geometric lines and materials like shagreen. Assay office stamps and maker marks provide the most accurate dating evidence for British silver items.

What materials are found in these lighters?

The primary material is solid sterling silver or silver plate, though many examples incorporate other substances. Glass, onyx, lapis lazuli, and brass frequently appear as structural or decorative elements. Mid-century pieces also introduce modern plastics like lucite and perspex into their construction.
