How do I date a silver frame?

Dating relies heavily on reading the hallmarks stamped into the silver, which indicate the specific assay office and year of production. Stylistic clues such as floral embossing or geometric shapes also point toward periods like the Edwardian era or Art Deco. Examining the construction of the backing and the thickness of the metal helps confirm whether a piece belongs to the Victorian period or mid-century production.

Are these frames meant for the wall or desk?

Most of these pieces are designed as free-standing accessories featuring easel backs for placement on desks, tables, or mantelpieces. A smaller subset includes wall mirrors intended to be hung directly. Desk frames rely on their hinged props to remain upright, while wall-mounted variations feature secure hanging loops integrated into their frames.

What backs are original to antique frames?

Original backings on these pieces typically consist of wood covered in black leather or coloured velvet, often secured with sliding clips or turn-pins. These materials naturally show age through softening or wear. Replacement backings are common in older pieces due to decades of handling and moisture exposure.

Can I polish the silver?

Cleaning requires a soft cloth and a gentle silver polish formulated to remove tarnish without stripping thin silver layers or damaging embossed details. Care must be taken around tortoiseshell and leather elements. Harsh chemical dips can ruin delicate fabric backings and discolour inset materials.
