How do I tell Victorian from Edwardian pieces?

Victorian examples often feature heavier ornamentation, robust casting, and deep hand-engraving reflecting nineteenth-century design tastes. Maker marks and date letters stamped on the silver provide precise verification. Edwardian pieces tend to display lighter, more streamlined silhouettes influenced by changing aesthetic movements at the turn of the century. Hallmarks remain the most reliable guide for separating these adjacent eras.

Are tortoiseshell blades fragile?

Tortoiseshell and mother-of-pearl require gentle handling because organic materials can become brittle with age and fluctuating humidity. They function best as light desk accessories rather than heavy-duty tools. Storing them away from direct sunlight preserves the rich colouration and prevents warping of the composite materials.

Why do some have animal motifs?

Victorian and Edwardian desk accessories frequently incorporated natural history themes, reflecting the era's fascination with wildlife and field sports. Cast silver figures of greyhounds, deer, and pheasants served as personal statements or hobby markers. Taxidermy elements and horn blades further underscored this connection to the natural world on executive desks.
