What is a sheraton mahogany tray table?

A sheraton mahogany tray table is a light movable furnishing featuring a raised rim top, constructed primarily from mahogany with decorative contrasting inlay. These pieces emerged during the Georgian period and saw revivals through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as versatile household furnishings.

How were these tables used originally?

Originally, tray tables provided portable surfaces for serving tea, holding lamps, or displaying precious decorative items in formal rooms. The removable or raised edges kept tableware secure while servants moved the trays between spaces within the house.

How do I date an Edwardian revival piece?

Edwardian interpretations from around nineteen hundred to nineteen ten often feature machine-sawn veneers and lighter internal construction timbers compared to eighteenth-century originals. Stylistic markers like Sheraton Revival motifs help distinguish these later interpretations from their Georgian prototypes.

What is the difference between an etagere and a tray table?

An etagere incorporates multiple open tiers for display and storage, whereas a tray table focuses primarily on a single raised-edge surface on a stand. Many surviving examples blend these forms by placing a tray top above a secondary lower shelf.
