Where should an overmantel mirror hang?

These mirrors traditionally anchor the space directly above a fireplace mantel, reflecting light throughout the room. Their substantial proportions require secure wall fixings into solid masonry or studwork. Placing them at this height balances the vertical volume of the chimney breast and creates a focal point in reception rooms.

How do I identify a Georgian style mirror?

Georgian and George III style pieces typically display refined symmetry, Rococo carved scrollwork, and rich giltwood surfaces. The framing relies on detailed wooden construction rather than heavy moulded composition. Proportions remain balanced, often featuring landscape formats or elaborate crestings characteristic of eighteenth-century design principles.

What is the difference between gesso and carved wood?

Carved wood involves shaping the solid timber base directly with gouges and chisels to form the ornamental relief. Gesso is a chalk and binder mixture layered over the wood to build up softer, highly detailed decorative flourishes. Many nineteenth-century mirrors combine both techniques, using a solid wood frame enhanced with moulded composition or gesso details.

How should I clean a antique giltwood frame?

Dusting requires a very soft, dry brush to remove particulate matter without disturbing fragile gold leaf or aged gesso. Liquid cleaners must be avoided entirely to prevent lifting the delicate historical surface. Professional conservation is recommended for any significant cleaning or stabilization of flaking gilt layers.
