What periods do these chairs date from?

The available pieces and historical archive primarily feature items from the nineteenth century and the Victorian era. Specific decades represented include the eighteen-twenties through to the late Victorian period. Craftsmanship from these periods relies heavily on solid mahogany and rosewood structures, often reflecting classic Regency or Louis Philippe design influences.

Where were these chairs used historically?

These seats served principally in libraries, studies, country house reception rooms, and salons. Their broad proportions and upholstered armrests provided comfort for reading, writing, or formal conversation. Library and desk chairs were built to support extended periods of seated work, while salon variants functioned as decorative yet comfortable seating for guests.

How do I maintain leather and wood?

Preserve the wood by keeping the mahogany or rosewood away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity changes. Regular dusting and occasional waxing help maintain the finish. Leather upholstery benefits from gentle cleaning and specialised conditioning to prevent drying and cracking over time, preserving the material's original texture.

How do I identify a scrolled arm?

The defining feature is the timber armrest curving inward or outward in a distinct scroll shape. This profile requires skilled woodworking to form the continuous contour from the support to the handrest. Makers often integrated this sculptural detail into mahogany frames to soften the visual line of heavy library and desk chairs.
