What is a Scotch chest?

A Scotch chest is a regional variant of the standard chest of drawers, typically featuring a deep top drawer positioned above smaller configuration drawers. These pieces often display bold mahogany veneers and substantial proportions characteristic of nineteenth-century Scottish workshops.

How tall are these chests?

These pieces stand significantly taller than standard drawer units, often incorporating a chest-on-chest structure or extra stacked drawers to increase vertical capacity. Because of this elevated height, buyers should measure ceiling clearance and wall space carefully before placement.

Mahogany and flame mahogany veneer dominate the exterior surfaces of these tall chests, paired with secondary timbers like oak and pine for structural stability. Drawer linings are frequently constructed from solid oak, reflecting robust period construction standards.

How do I date a piece?

Dating relies on examining construction traits, such as drawer dovetailing, secondary woods, and hardware styles associated with the Georgian, Regency, and Victorian eras. Regional Scottish design characteristics further help narrow the period of manufacture alongside listed dates.
