How do I spot an 18th century rocker?

Eighteenth-century examples display heavy timber construction, often utilising solid oak or elm with deep hand-cut joinery. Their proportions tend to be robust, reflecting earlier domestic habits. Surface patination on these older pieces shows decades of handling, revealing softer edges and darker tones developed over generations of use.

Are these chairs comfortable for daily sitting?

Many vernacular rocking chairs offer deep, supportive seating due to their generous wooden saddles and angled backs. Their comfort depends largely on the original ergonomic design shaped by country makers. Adding a simple squab cushion can make daily use more practical while preserving the antique timber frame underneath.

How should I care for an antique wooden rocker?

Protect the timber by keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity changes. Applying a microcrystalline wax periodically helps maintain the natural finish. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip the historic patination accumulated on the oak, elm, or pine surfaces.
