How do I clean a ruby red glass decanter?

Wash the vessel by hand in warm water with mild soap. Avoid abrasive sponges that might scratch the surface or wear away gilding. Dry the interior thoroughly with a lint-free cloth and store the stopper separately to allow air circulation inside the bottle.

Were these decanters used for port or wine?

Victorian households utilised these coloured glass bottles primarily for port, sherry, and spirits. The dark glass protected sensitive table wines from direct sunlight. Serving bottles and carafes also stood on sideboards for guests to pour drams after dinner.

How do I tell Victorian from Edwardian decanters?

Victorian examples tend to feature heavier proportions and richer cranberry hues with deep wheel-cut decoration. Stoppers often match the bulbous bodies. Edwardian pieces frequently display slender profiles, refined sterling silver mounts, and lighter engraving styles typical of the early twentieth century.

Can I use these antique decanters daily?

These vessels remain functional for serving wine and spirits provided you handle them with care. Hand washing preserves the delicate glass and silver mounts. Inspect the base and rim for stability before filling, and lift the bottle by the body rather than the handle or stopper.
