What is a clock garniture?

A clock garniture is a matched set consisting of a mantel clock accompanied by two side pieces, such as vases or urns, designed to be displayed together as a unified decorative scheme. These sets were placed on the mantelpiece of a formal room to create symmetry and visual impact, linking timekeeping with ornamental porcelain display.

Where were mantel vases placed?

As the name suggests, these vases were primarily designed to sit on the mantel shelf above a fireplace, often flanked by mirrors or candle sconces. They also found homes on console tables, sideboards, and pier tables where their bright colours and gilt mounts could catch the light.

What is Old Paris porcelain?

Old Paris porcelain refers to the diverse array of unmarked or variously marked porcelain items made by numerous independent studios operating in Paris from the late 18th through the 19th century. These workshops were known for bold colours, heavy gilding, and expressive floral painting that mirrored changing tastes from the Regency period to the late Victorian era.
