What is rococo revival?

Rococo revival refers to the nineteenth-century reinvention of eighteenth-century design principles. Makers drew inspiration from earlier French and German models to create ornate, fluid furnishings. This later iteration adopted heavier porcelain bodies while retaining the asymmetric scrolls and naturalistic motifs of the original period.

How do I clean porcelain candle holders?

Cleaning requires gentle dusting with a soft brush to protect fragile applied flowers and delicate painted details. Moisture can damage old adhesives or exposed unglazed clay. Harsh chemical cleaners should be avoided entirely to preserve the original enamel colours and gold leaf accents.

Are these candle holders safe to use?

Using antique candle holders requires caution due to the age of the ceramic and the presence of flammable decorative elements like bocage. Modern taper candles should be fitted securely without forcing them into the sockets. Extinguishing the flame well before it reaches the ceramic prevents thermal shock and potential cracking of the body.

How do I date a porcelain candlestick?

Dating relies on factory mark identification, glaze characteristics, and the style of the modelling. Eighteenth-century pieces often show patch marks or early underglaze blue signatures. Later nineteenth-century reproductions and revivals display sharper factory stamps and denser porcelain bodies characteristic of industrial improvements.
